Overview

In a healthy pregnancy, all fetal cells should have two copies of each chromosome, one from the mother’s egg and one from the father’s sperm. In total it should be 23 pairs of chromosomes. Chromosomal abnormalities, caused by missing or extra chromosomes, can result in a pregnancy affected with a chromosomal syndrome or a miscarriage.
